Inside Line Promotions – JEFFERSON, S.D. (Sept. 18, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi had a strong outing during his 410ci winged sprint car debut with BDS Motorsports last Friday.

“We’ve had a lot of success together in 360 action this year so it was great to carry that over into our first 410 race together,” Scelzi said. “I thought it went really well, especially with it being my first time at that track.”

Scelzi did double duty that night at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, where he qualified second quickest to open the IRA Sprint Car Series portion of the show. He then advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race to lock into the feature redraw, in which Scelzi pulled the No. 5 to start the main event fifth.

“It was an awesome facility and race track,” he said. “Early in the feature the track started to take rubber, but wasn’t that abrasive. I rode in fourth for a while. Me and Lynton Jeffrey raced for third most of the race. I got him right at the line. There were a lot of really good guys so it was great to run that well, especially with it being my first time there.”

Scelzi’s third-place result was his 18th top five of the season.

He also competed in a 360ci winged sprint car that evening. Scelzi won a heat race after starting third to make the feature redraw. This time he pulled the No. 3 to start the A Main third.

“I went into turn one and got out of sorts,” he said. “I tried to slide a guy and made a mistake so I had to restart 22nd. I just had to calm down. The racing lanes were right on the edge of the track or the very bottom. The race went green for a long time and I got up to 10th. On the restart I passed a few guys at the end when they got bottled up. It was a good rebound to how we started.”

Scelzi overcame the early miscue to record a sixth-place finish.

The team wrapped up the weekend on Saturday at Park Jefferson International Speedway with the Nebraska 360 Sprints. Scelzi placed sixth in a heat race before he won the B Main. That lined him up 17th for the main event.

“The track was super slick in hot laps and took rubber in the heats,” he said. “I was in the wrong lane in the heat race so that cost us. In the feature I got to seventh or eighth, but tried to push too hard and got out of the rubber.”

Scelzi ended the night by rallying from 17th to an 11th-place result, which earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

He and BDS Motorsports will compete this Thursday through Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the 7th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

“I’m really excited to race three nights in a row at the same track,” Scelzi said. “I think that will help and that we can be a contender come Saturday.”
