Park Jefferson Season Championships awarded in Three Classes on Classic Hits 106 Night

A huge field of 107 cars filled the Park Jefferson Speedway this Saturday on Classic Hits 106 night. 3 track champions were crowned and racing was superb until a powerful storm moved in causing officials to halt the program midway through the feature events. While the race is considered a completed event by IMCA officials as the heat races were finished, Park Jefferson officials working with IMCA to see if there is a way to have the final point battles settled on the track instead of through a rainout. In addition, the Keizer Wheels 360 Sprint Car event was also postponed to next Saturday, August 26th, during the annual USMTS visit to Park Jefferson. Because of IMCA rules, the SignMasters Modified, J&J Fitting Stock Cars, and Schaeffer Oil Sport Modified events cannot be made up during the USMTS race. Further details on those three features and the final point standings in those classes will be forthcoming after discussions with IMCA.

In the IMCA RACESaver Sprint Cars, it was track champion Colin Smith taking home the top spot in the Road to the Iron Cup event. With an extra $150 in the purse, Smith battled hard from his front row starting spot. Meanwhile, Elliot Amdahl charged from the 5th row to match Smith. With Smith working the top side of the speedway and Amdahl battling low, and then drivers swapping spots, the feature event had fans out of their chairs as the cars raced at over 100mph around the bullring. A midrace caution was too much for Amdahl, as Smith led the lap prior to the caution which ultimately proved to be the most important. The race had just gone past 1/2way and was declared official as the rain and lightning approached the speedway. Colin Smith becomes the inaugural IMCA Sprint Car Champion at Park Jefferson, taking the top honors over John Lambertz and Josh Sterret. It was a South Dakota dominated top 10 as 8 of 10 drivers were from the Mount Rushmore State.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks, it was Andy Hoffman roaring to his unprecedented seventh feature win. Racing against a diminished field of only 10 cars, Hoffman once again came from the 3rd row to take top honors. Mr. Consistency, Gavin Gilbertson, finished in the 2nd position and Aaron Shearn finished 1 spot ahead of 2017 track champion Craig Clift. Clift used his veteran skill to stay on Shearn’s back bumper, and in doing so earned a well-deserved track championship by besting Shearn by 5 points and David Miller by 6 points.

The Fox 620 Sport Compacts saw Dakota City, Nebraska’s Andrew Harris take the 15 car to the top spot and pick up the trophy. Harris, who has been hit or miss at the track this season, was able to take the win off of Derek Boggs who had a strong run to round out a great 2017 season. Danny VanderVeen was third. It was David Bates who strung together a consistent season and was awarded the IMCA Sport Compact championship at Park Jefferson. Bates was able to take the championship by 7 points over Sioux Cities Luke Jackson, and Derek Boggs finished an impressive 3rd in points this season. Bates, Boggs, and youngster Shyanne McCulley were the iron men of Park Jefferson Speedway racing in all 13 events this season without DQ.

Racing continues this Saturday with the inaugural visit by the USMTS along with the Nebraska 360 Sprints vs. MSTS. The USRA Iron Man will also be on hand. Gates open at 4pm with racing slated for 7pm. Adult tickets $25, Seniors 70+$20 and Children 6-16 $12
